Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a protein involved in cholesterol and lipid transport. This qualitative test detects whether you carry the E3 variant of the ApoE gene. ApoE has three common variants (E2, E3, E4), and your genetic combination influences cholesterol metabolism and disease risk. The E3 variant is considered neutral for most health outcomes. Testing helps assess genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease, particularly when E4 variants are present.
The APOE gene has three variants (e2, e3, and e4) that influence how your body processes cholesterol and may affect Alzheimer's disease risk. Your combination of two alleles (your genotype) determines your genetic predisposition. The e4 variant is associated with higher Alzheimer's risk, while e2 may be protective. This genetic test provides information about inherited disease risk, though it does not diagnose disease. Many factors beyond genetics influence actual disease development.
